The empowerHER® story starts with a young girl who has lost her mother.  Founder Cara Belvin formed empowerHER in 2013 out of gratitude she had for all the support her family received after her own mother, Kit, died of breast cancer. Cara was just 9 years old and desperate to meet others who could relate to her loss. Now with the support of countless volunteers + donors around the world, Cara’s “simple” idea has become a reality. And that reality is now gender inclusive.

It is our honor and mission to empower, support, and connect all children and young adults who have experienced the loss of a parent.  We provide events that remind them they are not alone in their grief, and a unique one-on-one mentor program with positive role models from the community who help show them that loss is survivable.

- WHAT WE DO -

empowerHER was formed in 2013 as a grassroots movement in a small coastal town in Massachusetts by founder Cara Belvin. In an effort to bring teenage girls together on Mother’s Day weekend, and simply build community for girls + women who could relate to the loss of their mothers, word quickly spread across the country. Today, empowerHER provides an integrated series of programming year-round, at no charge to the family, in the United States and the United Kingdom.

And, we now serve all children and young adults of any parent loss.

EVENTS are community-based, volunteer-driven and non-therapeutic and serve to remind children that they are not alone in their grief.

Our MENTOR PROGRAM consists of caring + strong adult role models who have also experienced parent loss and help show them that loss is survivable.
