Mentorship instills hope + optimism while building confidence and showing children that loss is survivable.
Founded in 2013 by Boston native Cara Belvin, empowerHER is a one-of-a-kind organization that offers one-on-one support and is available both in-person and virtually for children + young adults through age 24.
If you know + love a child who has experienced parent loss and who could benefit from an empowerHER Mentor, please click the US or UK button below to enroll them in our program.
Our Mentors empower each child to find their voice, and to see that this beautiful life still holds joy. If you are interested in serving as an empowerHER Mentor in the US or UK, please click the appropriate box below.
Who Are Mentors?
empowerHER Mentors are positive role models age 25+ who have also experienced the loss of their mother or father. Mentor meetups can take place in-person or virtually around milestone moments such as holidays, back to school shopping, parent’s anniversary or birthdays, and more; while always respecting the family’s needs and preferences. Mentors are volunteers, non-therapeutic, and simply serve as a supportive person in the life of the child and who can understand the complexity of their grief.
It’s A Match!
Matches may consider geographical proximity so that in-person meetups are possible. The frequency and duration of communication and meetups is flexible and is discussed with each family during the matching process. When geographically close, meetups can include a walk, ice cream, or attending an empowerHER EVENT in your area. Matches that are virtual can involve attendance at an empowerHER Virtual event, Zoom/FaceTime calls, Netflix watch parties, virtual museum tours, or just a phone call or text to check-in and show support.
Safe + Responsible Screening
At empowerHER, the safety and well-being of each child is our top priority. Our MENTOR PROGRAM partners with Mass Mentor Partnerships (MMP) and follows best practices in screening, training, and monitoring guidelines for each prospective Mentor.
