empowerHER Unveils LEGACY Group Designed to Support, Empower and Connect Girls Age 19-24
Inaugural event includes private tour of Massachusetts State House
Norwell, MA – August 21, 2019 - empowerHER, a nonprofit organization serving young girls who have experienced the early loss of their mothers, today announced LEGACY, a one-of-a-kind initiative designed to support, empower and connect girls age 19-24. Today, empowerHER serves girls up to age 24. With this announcement, empowerHER will now offer unique programming and events designed to bridge the gap between high school and the “real world,” and foster the next generation of empowerHER mentors. With events expected throughout the year, the program kicked off with a private tour of the Massachusetts State House hosted by LEGACY member Muriel Mena and her mentor Kim Fontes. With an interest in politics and social change, Muriel spearheaded the inaugural LEGACY event with a private tour of the Massachusetts State House. Massachusetts Representative Patrick Kearney (4th Plymouth) was on hand to guide the tour and introduced the girls to local legislators and leaders including Representatives Tami Gouveia (14th Middlesex), Maria Duaime Robinson (6th Middlesex) and Alyson M. Sullivan (7th Plymouth) as well as Nicole Stephens, Executive Director, Massachusetts Caucus of Women Legislators. This event, the first of many anticipated throughout the year, was an ideal opportunity to not only learn more about their state government, but connect as the first generation of LEGACY members and discuss how they may extend the empowerHER community as they transition to adulthood.
“When a young girl experiences the traumatic loss of her mother at a young age, the support needed doesn’t end when college or job opportunities begin. The years between age 19 and 24 are incredibly formative and peer to peer support is as critical as ever,” said Cara Belvin, founder, empowerHER. “It is our hope that by offering this new group, we extend the value of our unique programming, offer a safe space for these young women to continue on their journey of self-discovery and consider how they may leave their legacy for future generations.”
“By providing opportunities such as the tour of the State House, we were able to connect LEGACY members with influential women who have also overcome challenges in their lives,” said empowerHER mentor Kim Fontes. “These real life examples further support and educate our mentees on all of the career options that are available to young women today.”
