The Conversation: Stories that Matter

Live event featured leading authors, documentarians, and therapists to discuss early mother loss

Scituate, MA – December 8 2017 – empowerHER, a non-profit organization for young girls who have experienced the early loss of their mothers, announced today it has partnered with HBO and the executive women’s group Women@HBO, to produce an ongoing series around the topic of early mother loss, and how daughters and sons are defined, shaped, and inspired by a mother’s death. The new series, “The Conversation: Stories that Matter,” hosted its first event at the HBO Theater in New York City on November 8th 2017 and featured personal, honest stories from extraordinary speakers and presenters including empowerHER founder Cara Belvin. The event is now available for download. Please visit: www.theconvoseries.com to learn more.

The Conversation, the first on mother loss, focused on what is seldom discussed but most important; transcendence. The unique format included powerful Ted-style talks by acclaimed authors Hope Edelman and Claire Bidwell Smith; an inspirational and moving panel moderated by Author & Therapist Carole Geithner, and intimate interviews discussing legacies of loss to include ModernLoss.com Cofounder Rebecca Soffer. Cara also offered her perspective and joined a number of additional speakers from arts and entertainment, sports, and more, who have created greatness in their respective fields after loss.

According to one attendee, ““I have so much love and gratitude for all the women who I had the honor of spending the day with. Through the open sharing of your stories with us today (and with the world in each of your books) you have relieved so many of us who experienced loss and grief from the deafening isolation that has echoed through so many of our lives.”

Event producers include Cara Belvin, founder of empowerHER, Author Hope Edelman, Author & Therapist Claire Bidwell Smith, Documentarians Carlye Rubin & Katie Green of Smoke & Apple Films, and Author Cynthia Whipple. Event contributors include ModernLoss.com Co-Founder Rebecca Soffer, Journalist & Author Allison Gilbert, Marketing Manager, HBO Gabby Shea, Author & Therapist Carole Geithner, Knock Knock Founder Jen Bilik, Aspiring Writer & Therapist Eva Bloche, Author Gail Eisenberg, & Barbara Ford Grant, SVP, HBO Digital Production Services.

“We are honored to collaborate with some of the most inspiring and hopeful industry thought leaders to help others navigate the devastating impact of mother loss and rise above to greatness,” said Cara Belvin, founder, empowerHER. “We look forward to continuing our candid and intimate Conversation and together serve those who might just need a reminder of their own strength in times of loss.”
