Runner Kelly Jaworski Joins TEAM empowerHER
to Honor Mother’s Legacy

North Carolina native to run a half marathon in all 50 states to support the empowerHER community

Norwell, MA – September 24, 2019 - empowerHER, a nonprofit organization serving young girls who have experienced the early loss of their mothers, today announced runner Kelly Jaworski will run a half marathon in all 50 states as part of TEAM empowerHER to honor her mother’s legacy. The North Carolina native lost her mother unexpectedly when Kelly was only 16 years old and found running to be a healthy and effective vehicle to channel her emotions as she navigated her grief. To date, Kelly has completed half marathons in 17 states. Next, she plans to run the Valley Forge Half Marathon in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania on October 6th. TEAM empowerHER was founded to connect individuals and families who participate in races, runs and walks and share a mission to help raise funds and awareness for the brave, beautiful girls of empowerHER. As a young woman who experienced the sudden and unexpected loss of her mother, Kelly felt especially moved to support other girls who found themselves in the same unfortunate position. Recently connected with empowerHER, Kelly has made it her mission to run a race in all 50 states, representing empowerHER. A natural athlete, Kelly found running took on a new meaning after the loss of her mom. She notes, “My relationship with running has really evolved to one that offers a safe space to deeply and honestly explore my thoughts and emotions. Sometimes, when I’m training, I have to stop, not because I’m tired but because I spent several miles grieving, reflecting, and processing. I give myself a quick emotional release and then hit the pavement again, strengthened by the powerful healing effect of my mind and body working together to overcome my grief.”

This past April marked 10 years since Kelly’s mom passed. With a renewed sense of purpose, Kelly decided to dedicate her running to empowerHER as she makes her way across our country, one step at a time. Kelly reflects, “There is a strong presence of my mom in this adventure. When I was in middle school, we went on a cross-country road trip full of great adventures and quality time together. While we didn’t hit every state, this running challenge offers me the chance to see all 50 with her by my side.”

From 5Ks to mud runs, any athletic event can be considered for TEAM empowerHER. Current opportunities to participate include upcoming races in Hartford, CT, Detroit, MI and Los Angeles, CA.
